So what happens when John visits your school?
Visits normally include the following:
*These timings are approximate and normally represent minimum session length - the more flexibility the timetable has, the more likely I am to go on a bit longer!
My major aim is to help the school in developing or maintaining a culture of Reading for Pleasure.
It sometimes feels like not a day goes by without someone producing more evidence that reading for pleasure is enormously good for both children and adults. An author visit can be a very effective way to help children make the connection between reading and fun! Here's some feedback from my visits:
“Interest in the art of writing… as well as the pure pleasure of reading AND being read to, has increased ten-fold” - Literacy co-ordinator, Gloucestershire
“It’s not easy to hold the attention of our children but John managed it magnificently. The children are absolutely delighted to know a real, live author” - Deputy Head at a school for children with social/emotional/behavioural & learning difficulties, Gloucestershire
“Fantastic… a wonderful inspiration. There really is no substitute for this sort of experience” - Deputy Head, Berkshire
“It gave me more courage with my own writing” - Year 5 pupil
“He made me think that writing is fun and I could do it” - Year 2 pupil
“My little girl told me the story she had heard from the author and talked about it all afternoon. She loved it!” - parent of Nursery pupil
“I didn’t want him to stop, it was such fun!” - Year 3 pupil
“The perfect mix of entertainment and inspiration!” - Literacy coordinator, Shropshire
“It made me want to read the books straight away. I’m reading one now” - Year 3 pupil
“I thought it was good that he gave detail when he answered our questions” - Year 6 pupil
“I really liked it that he gave us tips when we are stuck on a story” - Year 5 pupil
“I’ve programmed the Glasgow’s West End Festival for nine years now and prior to that worked for many years as a children’s bookseller. I can say that John is one of the very best authors for schools we’ve had and certainly at the front rank of authors that I’d recommend for both schools and festival events” - Teresa Lowe
“A natural entertainer, with a guitar-strumming comedy routine that would go down well on kids’ TV” - Stroud News & Journal
At no additional charge, the following extras may also be offered where timetabling permits:
Please ask if you're interested in either of these!
As well as the format recommended above, I can offer the following:
With the publication of Dinosaurs & Dinner-Ladies, I've branched out into poetry visits!
As with the author visits, I'll offer 20 minutes with FS, 40 minutes with KS1, and an hour with KS2 - but I'll take the older ones in 2 hour-long sessions, one for upper KS2 and one for lower.
If you'd like me to come to your school and run writing workshops, I can do that!
The day will generally involve no more than two hour-long workshops for single classes, plus a whole-school assembly.
Please let me know if there's a particular aspect of story-writing you'd like the workshop to focus on, and I'll do my best to tailor the session to your needs.
